I doubt that this is an original thought but I would like to toss it out the.

How many statues of Hitler are there in Germany or Austria?

None that I know of. Why not?

Because they looked at their own history and decided that this was a bad chapter. They realized what shit and pain he caused.

In America, we fought to defeat his hatred. Have we really faced our own faults? No, some want to glorify the bad chapter in our own history.

I saw a post earlier today that made me look at our own history differently. It basically compared those of European decent to those of slaves. The point that the writer made was that while most European immigrants can celebrate their history, those brought over as slaves do not know their history as it was taken from them. This statement truly opened my eyes to this basic difference. I had never thought of this aspect but it is very true. I apologize for not being able to credit the appropriate writer but I lost track of the post.

Although my family was not involved in this portion of our history, I want to help move past it by acknowledging it.

We need to stop trying to beat people down and make sure that we bring everyone to a better place. We need to face our past and make this world a better place.

When you want to remember history, you build museums and write books.

When you want to celebrate history, you build statues and monuments.

We absolutely should remember the Confederacy and the lengths to which people were willing to go in the name of slavery, racism, and provincialism–remember, not celebrate. Tear them all down, replace them with statues of Nat Turner and Harriet Tubman and so on. You know, the actual heroes of the period.
