Everyone remembered where they were the day that Captain Alpha succumbed to the lusts of Doctor Conquest.
The genius supervillain had plotted for years to be able to trap the Vixen of Vigor underground, far from the nourishing light of Earth’s yellow sun. He had encoded subliminal messages in the Quimtonian language to better influence her subconscious mind. He had programmed hundreds of Sexbots to overwhelm her with unending sensuality that would feed her lust, but not recharge her powers.
And, Doctor Conquest had hacked the world’s communications systems so the whole planet was forced to watch Captain Alpha’s every quiver and hear her every moan. When the moans shifted to begging, people took notice. When the begging became mantras of devotion, people began to worry.
When the world’s most powerful heroine thrashed in orgasm while screaming, “I serve Doctor Conquest! I am his Captain Conquest! Forever!” the whole world descended into panic.

Definitely option two. Many of the heroes may be in denial about it, but that doesn’t change the warm, hard facts.
